Here are some skills everyone can work to improve, regardless of where you’re at in your career.

1. Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the ability to notice your emotional response to events, without reacting to them. In stressful situations, being mindful will allow you to pause and reevaluate the situation. To start, take an extra breath and try to examine events from an objective point of view.

2. Celebrate uniqueness and difference in everyone

Learning to collaborate across differences in this diverse world is a timeless necessity. Organizations that can collaborate and work effectively across differences like gender, race, religion, politics, and age will be the ones at the front of the pack. Become more aware of your unconscious biases about people who are different than you.

4. Always do your best

Most work involves tasks ranging from simple, monotonous, every day to complex ones that take months or years to complete. You produce the most value by focusing on the more complex tasks, but you can’t do these at the expense of short-term job requirements.

Finding the right balance is challenging because you can easily become consumed. Find a way that you work best and can find time for both.

5. Empathy

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see how it might feel to be him or her. Working on your emotional intelligence will help you develop trust amongst your co-workers. You will build a connection with them, making them feel seen and heard.

6. Learn how

Be curious and ask questions. You’ll face great challenges and search for answers. Somewhere in your search, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to find your answers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—at work, and of yourself and your career.

Self-improvement is for everyone. Working on these skills is a journey with endless possibilities for growth and insight. Focusing on them will move you forward.
