2R supports the National Sexual Violence Resource Center

This past Saturday, as a part of our Two Roads wellness program, I attended a woman’s only self-defense workshop.  All proceeds from the workshop went to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

The workshop was not about becoming a fighter in a traditional sense; it was about waking up the fighter in you and coming out of your shell.  It is a state of mind – that you will not be a victim and that you will fight if the need arises.

My take aways:

  • Most encounters are about control.  If you can take the control away from the attacker, even for a few seconds, the odds swing your way.
  • Stay in control of yourself and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Stay on your feet!
  • Elbows are an awesome tool when used correctly.
  • You have to hit harder than you ever imagined.
  • You cannot be shy, you cannot be timid, and you will need to explode into action when and if trouble comes your way.

Fighting is against most cultural and societal norms, especially for woman.  The vast majority of people are simply not mentally ready nor prepared with a plan to escape a confrontation that has turned physical.

Although awkward at first because you get close and personal with your fellow classmates, the class was a great way to walk through a scenario throwing actual punches and I would recommend it for everyone.

Thank you for the push Two Roads!
